When Mary K. Elkins first encountered Pig Pen, a pit bull abandoned by the roadside, the scene was heart-wrenching. The dog was severely emaciated, suffering from Demodex mange, and his condition was a stark cry for help.
Mary recalls, “Those sad eyes were the ones that met mine when I saw him on the side of the road.” The sight of Pig Pen, in such a deplorable state, took her breath away. In her car, she had some stale Pirate’s Booty, which she threw to him.

Initially, Mary feared the worst for Pig Pen. His condition was so dire that she thought she might have to have him euthanized. His body was covered in infections and mange, making him appear almost unrecognizable.
