In the wake of the 2023 Rugby World Cup, New Zealand All Blacks coach Jason Ryan has voiced strong condemnation against the rising abuse directed at match officials on social media. His comments follow a disturbing report by World Rugby, highlighting the extent of this issue. According to the report, match official Wayne Barnes bore the brunt of this abuse, receiving a staggering one-third of all negative messages aimed at individuals.
Ryan did not hold back, labeling the online abuse as "disgusting" and demanding immediate action. "This kind of behavior is unacceptable and needs to be addressed at the highest level," Ryan stated. He suggested both legal interventions and proactive measures from World Rugby to curb this growing menace. "We need to set a precedent that this sort of conduct will not be tolerated," he added.
