In a world where cultivators wield supernatural powers by harnessing spiritual energy, the path to becoming an immortal being is arduous and demanding. Two immortals, Namely and May, engage in a game of chess, reflecting on Master Lee’s frustration. Lee is troubled by the persistent, failed attempts to contact him through a black incense from Earth, a ritual that has failed twelve times before. Determined to uncover the source of the disturbance, Lee decides to journey to Earth.
On Earth, we meet By, a lonely and disparaged figure despised by his village. By’s attempts to light the black incense have been met with ridicule and anger from the villagers, who view him as a troublemaker and a burden. Despite his attempts to contact the immortals, By is mocked and scorned, seen as a "white weasel" who consumes their resources. The village headmaster, who raised By after the death of his parents, tries to temper the villagers’ disdain but ultimately supports the prayer to remove By from their midst.
