Growing potatoes without digging is an innovative technique that can save you time and effort while producing healthy, high-quality tubers. This method involves using undisturbed soil and adding mulch on top, which is a straightforward and effective way to cultivate potatoes. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do it.

Preparing the Soil

The preparation for growing potatoes without digging is quite simple.

You don't need to create a special bed or dig a trench. Instead, start with undisturbed soil and cover it with mulch. For my setup, I use compost as mulch. A layer of about 3 to 4 centimeters (1 to 1.5 inches) of compost was added to the bed in the autumn, following the harvest of leeks. This particular bed has been growing potatoes for four years, and this will be the fifth year. This long-term use shows that, contrary to popular belief, rotating vegetables every year is not always necessary.
