In a Japan where swords have been banned, a wandering samurai named Kenshin Himura appears to be nothing more than a homeless drifter. However, his true identity and strength are revealed when he saves a young girl named Kaoru from a dangerous situation. The story begins with Kenshin walking through a dark alley when Kaoru confronts him, mistaking him for a notorious murderer named Battousai.
Kaoru charges at Kenshin, but he dodges awkwardly, stumbling to the ground, making her realize he might not be the killer she thought. Kenshin introduces himself as a wandering samurai, carrying a fake sword to deter thieves.
