Pilonidal abscesses are among the most excruciating conditions one can experience, and they often result from an infection in the pilonidal sinuses. These sinuses are small, tunnel-like cavities located near the tailbone (coccyx) in the skin.

What Is a Pilonidal Abscess?

A pilonidal abscess forms when an ingrown hair or other debris becomes trapped in these sinuses. Over time, the trapped material can lead to an infection, causing the area to become swollen and filled with pus.

This results in a painful, inflamed area known as an abscess. The condition is known to cause severe discomfort and can be debilitating if left untreated.

Who Is at Risk?

Pilonidal abscesses are most commonly observed in individuals who are overweight, particularly males who sit for long periods. However, this condition can also affect women and people of various body types. The common factor is the prolonged pressure on the area around the tailbone, which can contribute to the development of these abscesses.
